How Multi-Column Load Cells Work

CR Series multi-column load cell diagram showing internal load paths and strain gauge configuration for accurate bidirectional force measurement.

The CR series multi-column load cell architecture distributes applied force across multiple internal load-bearing columns. This redundant load path achieves several advantages over single-column designs: higher stiffness in a compact envelope, excellent lateral load rejection, and consistent accuracy across the full measurement range.

When a tensile or compressive force is applied, the columns compress or extend proportionally. Internal strain gauges bonded to each column detect this deformation and generate an electrical signal proportional to the applied load. The multi-column arrangement means that lateral or off-axis loading has minimal effect on the measurement, making these transducers ideal for test fixtures and process equipment where perfect force alignment cannot always be guaranteed.

The bidirectional nature means a single CR series load cell measures both pulling (tension) and pushing (compression) forces without damage or physical repositioning. The alloy steel construction provides mechanical strength and repeatable output over millions of load cycles.

Who Uses CR Series Multi-Column Load Cells

Materials Testing Laboratories
Characterize tensile strength, compression resistance, and elastic properties of metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics. The ±0.05% repeatability ensures reproducible test results across multiple specimens and batches.
Force Measurement & Test Equipment Manufacturers
OEM designers integrate CR series load cells into universal testers, hydraulic press fixtures, and adhesion testers. The compact multi-column design allows for space-constrained installations without sacrificing accuracy.
Industrial Weighing & Quality Control
Verify production quality by measuring pull force in fastener testing, adhesive bond strength, or mechanical assembly loads. Bidirectional measurement eliminates the need for separate tension and compression transducers.

Selection Guide

Choosing the correct CR series model requires identifying your maximum force requirement and understanding whether your application involves tension, compression, or both.

Step 1: Determine Maximum Load

Identify the maximum force your application will impose. Include a safety margin (typically 20–30% above the measured peak). Example: if you measure a peak load of 150 kgf, the CR-200KGF provides adequate headroom and improved accuracy linearity.

Step 2: Bidirectional Requirements

Confirm whether your application involves tension, compression, or both. CR series load cells are bidirectional by design, so a single transducer handles both directions. This simplifies test fixture design and reduces inventory.

Step 3: Accuracy & Repeatability Needs

The CR series standard accuracy is ±0.25% FS (nonlinearity and hysteresis) with ±0.05% repeatability. For materials testing and calibration work, this specification is sufficient. For reference-grade applications, consult the engineering team about custom compensation or higher-grade certification.

Step 4: Environmental Conditions

Operating temperature range is -42 to 93°C with full accuracy compensation from 15 to 72°C. If your test environment exceeds the compensated range, temperature drift correction may be needed in your measurement system. Verify cable routing and connector protection for the application environment.

Step 5: Electrical Integration

Standard CR series specifications: 350Ω output impedance, 410±30Ω input impedance, 10V DC/AC excitation (15V maximum). These values are compatible with standard strain gauge signal conditioners, data acquisition modules, and force indicators from Transcell and industry suppliers.

Installation and Cable Management

Mounting Orientation

CR series load cells are mounted between the force application point and the measurement structure. Ensure that force flows axially through the transducer. Lateral or bending loads degrade accuracy and can cause mechanical damage. Use appropriate fixtures to center the load.

Cable Specifications

Standard cable is 4-conductor shielded, 28 AWG, polyurethane jacketed, 10 feet (3 meters) in length. For longer cable runs, use low-noise instrumentation cable to minimize noise pickup in sensitive measurement circuits. Shield the cable and ground it at one point only (usually at the signal conditioner).

Connector Protection

CR series load cells ship with standard connectors. In wet or corrosive environments, verify connector material compatibility and consider protective overmolding or sealed conduit. Water ingress can degrade strain gauge performance and create signal noise.

Temperature Compensation

The CR series is temperature compensated across 15–72°C. If operation outside this range is required, a high-precision indicator or data logger with temperature input can apply correction factors. Contact the engineering team for custom temperature compensation strategies.

The design follows principles established in ASTM E4 (Verification of Force-Measuring Instruments) and ISO 6954 (Industrial Process Measurement and Control – Pressure Transducers).

RoHS & Environmental Compliance

CR series load cells are RoHS compliant. The alloy steel construction is fully recyclable. All electronic components meet restriction-of-hazardous-substances directives.

Calibration & Traceability

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a multi-column load cell?
A multi-column load cell uses an internal architecture with multiple load-bearing columns to distribute force evenly. This design achieves high accuracy and stiffness in a compact package, making it ideal for laboratory testing and industrial measurement applications. The CR series uses precision-machined alloy steel columns with bonded strain gauges to detect deformation.
Can the CR series measure both tension and compression?
Yes. The CR series is bidirectional, measuring both tension and compression forces. A single transducer can handle pulling and pushing loads without damage or recalibration. The output signal changes polarity to indicate load direction, making it simple for indicator electronics to distinguish between tension and compression.
What accuracy can I expect from the CR series?
CR series multi-column load cells provide ±0.25% full-scale nonlinearity and hysteresis, with ±0.05% repeatability. These specifications make them suitable for precision materials testing, calibration work, and OEM force measurement. For reference-grade applications requiring better than ±0.1% accuracy, consult the engineering team about custom compensation options.
What temperature range do these load cells operate in?
CR series load cells operate from -42 to 93°C. Full accuracy compensation is maintained across 15 to 72°C. Outside the compensated range, output drift increases gradually at a rate of approximately ±0.01% FS per degree Celsius. For applications requiring operation below -42°C or above 93°C, contact the engineering team for custom specifications.
