SBS single-ended shear beam load cell overview

The SBS is an alloy steel single-ended shear beam load cell engineered for compression-only force measurement in floor scales, platform scales, and industrial weighing systems. Its single-ended cantilever design bolts at one end while the platform or load structure bears down on the free end, making it one of the most widely used load cell geometries in commercial weighing. Available from 250 lb up to 20,000 lb, the SBS covers the full range of floor scale, truck scale, and heavy industrial platform applications. With ±0.03% nonlinearity, IP67 environmental protection, and NTEP certification (CoC 95-146) on models from 1,000 lb to 10,000 lb, the SBS delivers reliable legal-for-trade performance at a competitive price point. Typical applications

The SBS shear beam load cell is commonly specified for compression weighing in platform scales, floor scales, and industrial systems where one end is fixed and the load is applied from above.

Floor scales and platform scales
The SBS is one of the most widely used load cells in floor and platform scale construction. Multiple cells are mounted at each corner of the scale deck, with the fixed end bolted to the base and the free end supporting the platform, summed through a junction box to produce a combined weight reading.

Batching and blending systems
Commonly used in blending, mixing, and batching systems where stable, repeatable compression readings are required under continuous cyclic loading. The SBS's robust alloy steel construction handles the demands of high-cycle industrial batching without drift or fatigue.

Belt scales and conveyor weighing
The SBS's single-ended cantilever geometry and wide capacity range make it well-suited for belt scale weigh frames and in-motion conveyor weighing systems requiring a compact, bolted-down sensor that handles dynamic loading reliably.

Tank and vessel weighing

Technical notes

Installation and mounting

The SBS mounts via bolt holes at the fixed end, with the load applied downward at the free (cantilevered) end. The mounting surface must be flat, rigid, and level for accurate readings. Side loading and off-axis forces should be minimized. Use check rods or anti-rotation restraints where horizontal forces or vibration are present. For multi-cell platform scale installations, mount one SBS at each support point and use a summing junction box to balance and combine the outputs before connecting to the indicator.

System integration

The SBS operates at a rated excitation of 10V DC/AC (15V max) and produces a 3.0 mV/V analog output signal. It is compatible with any standard weight indicator, PLC analog input, or load cell conditioner accepting a mV/V bridge input. For multi-cell floor scale or platform installations, a load cell summing junction box is used to balance and combine signals from each cell before passing a single output to the indicator.
